It is not an easy task to do two weddings back to back for the same family, and do them both so perfectly. You were able to capture the true essence of each of the couples. It was March 2020, and our wedding (which we had been planning for more than a year - beautiful venue, reception for about 100 guests, etc.) had just been cancelled due to Covid. Claudia and I decided that we didn't want to wait an unknown amount of time until the pandemic was over; we wanted to be married.

That meant we needed a new officiant, since our previously-scheduled officiant was unavailable. I emailed everyone I knew, asking for help. A close friend of mine replied, "My friend Cheryl is a cantor." Claudia and I were married the next day, in a five-person ceremony (the legally-allowed limit at the time) at the park near my condo, with Cantor Wunch sitting in her car across the street, talking to us via a Zoom video chat on our phones.

I'm explaining this whole story because I want to make it clear how surprising it was that Cantor Wunch ended up making us enjoy our wedding ceremony more than we had expected to enjoy the one we had previously planned.

Cantor Wunch didn't just perform a perfunctory, impersonal ceremony. She took the time, during the 24 hours in between meeting us and marrying us, to listen to our story and get to know us. (She even talked to my friend and my parents to find out a little more about us.) We didn't know what she was planning to say, but she was confident and reassuring, and so we trusted her. And she did a wonderful job. (Many of our friends and family, watching the video on YouTube afterward, told us how great she was.) She was authentic and intelligent, and she made our wedding feel warm and personal and fun despite the ridiculously compressed timetable.

It was a true honour to have Cantor Wunch stand with us under the chuppah on our special day.

Our journey with Cantor Wunch began with a series of pre-marital counselling sessions. Although we both felt emotionally and mentally prepared for marriage from the outset, Cantor Wunch helped us identify areas that could benefit from even more strengthening and improved communication. Cantor Wunch assisted us in further developing the tools required to sustain a strong marriage and to navigate future challenges with openness, patience and mutual respect. Through these sessions, we developed a strong, trusting relationship with Cantor Wunch and were delighted to have her officiate our wedding given how intimately she understood us individually and our dynamic as a couple and given how comfortable we had become with her.

Cantor Wunch took the time to truly understand our vision for the ceremony and ultimately delivered a ceremony that was perfectly fitting. It was very touching, she spoke and sang beautifully, and it reflected who we are as a couple. We would not have changed a single thing.

Many of our guests went out of their way to report to us that they loved our ceremony and thought that Cantor Wunch gave the ceremony a very warm, personal and intimate character. Two of our guests, who are getting married next year, have already contacted Cantor Wunch to request that she officiate their ceremony.

From the start, Cheryl struck us not only as someone who made learning more about Judaism and Hebrew fun – and easy – but also as someone we could trust to guide us as we took the next step in our journey: getting married. Cheryl is amazing and met all of our needs and expectations; in fact, she exceeded them. More importantly, she worked with us to build a strong foundation for our marriage by helping us grow even closer as future husband and wife, strengthening our communication skills and spirituality. Cheryl is incredibly skillful at doing this, and always very professional. She really works to get to know you, individually and as a couple. Though my (now) husband and I were slightly nervous leading up to the wedding (as many couples are), Cantor Wunch made us feel so comfortable and at ease each time with met with her. When I first had the pleasure of meeting you at our Alyth synagogue, you made an immediate impression with your open, friendly, warm approach in your pastoral position towards our congregation.
My son, Professor Simon Baron Cohen and I enjoyed the interpretation and warmth of your chazzanut, introducing a spirit of fun to our services.
Your work and influence on our synagogue choir, and especially the young choristers was also very influential.
Your sermons also brought a fresh approach to the subjects you chose.
It was also appreciated how quickly you bonded with our congregation --- good luck in your future career and life --I hope we will keep in touch, and perhaps have the pleasure of meeting again.

Cantor Wunch officiated our wedding in 2013. As much time as we spent planning the flowers, the food, the band etc, none of it holds a candle to the beauty and richness of our ketubah signing and ceremony. Not only did Cantor Wunch work hand in hand with us to plan our time under the chuppah, but she provided us with months of premarital counseling that was incredibly valuable and insightful. She acknowledged and honored both my husband's and my background as she provided us with a framework with which to base our day-to-day relationship as well as our spiritual path moving forward as a husband and wife. I feel such gratitude to have had her guidance and we miss our monthly meetings with her to this day!

We were lucky and blessed to have Cantor Wunch as our cantor just before she went to London. It was an emotional time for our Congregation as we were forced to downsize due to the severe economic downturn in the U.S. economy from 2008-2013. Cheryl was the glue that held us together through the most trying time we have ever experienced as a Congregation in our 38 year history. We came out if it in tact largely because of the crucial leadership provided by her and a few others in our most serious time of need. She is very knowledgeable, she is warm and friendly, she is stable and normal (which isn't always true with clergy - I know I served on the Board)- she is everything you could ask for in a cantor, a person, a leader and a friend. We celebrated, with much joy, the bat mitzvah of our daughter Ariella last year. We were lucky and privileged that it was Cantor Cheryl who bat mitzvah'd Ariella. What an incredible inspiration and teacher she proved to be, with a lovely warmth and enthusiasm which was just so special. From the minute she and Ariella met there was such a lovely ease between them. Cantor Cheryl showed such genuine interest in and care for Ariella, and also for our family, and she was totally involved and focused on helping us celebrate our special day and achieve everything we wanted from it. Every member of our family was of interest to Cantor Cheryl and she worked this into the entire service. The wisdom and peace with which she spoke drew all of the congregation together and her words made an impression on all those there. We all had a part to play in the ceremony, she missed no detail. Ariella's siblings, grandparents, aunt cousins, and we her parents, were all involved. It was a most moving and special morning and one which will never be forgotten. As Cantor Cheryl leaves our synagogue and embarks on a new journey, we wish her success, peace and joy. We will treasure always the time we got to know her and are grateful for her commitment, beautiful energy and music. Thank you Cantor Cheryl from all the Lahyani family - Ronnie, Joanna, Tal, Charlie, Ariella & Eden.

A Huge Impact on Our Family

As members of Congregation Beth Am, in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, our family had the great pleasure of listening to, working with and learning from Cantor Cheryl Wunch. We really got to know Cheryl because our daughters were both in Kavannah, the youth choir, which met weekly after Sunday school. Because our oldest daughter, Erin, has special needs and is mostly nonverbal, we spoke with Cheryl often about her needs, realistic expectations and how Erin could have a positive experience. It wasn’t long before we recognized what a special bond the two of them had formed. Erin was drawn to Cheryl’s voice, her guitar and her unconditional acceptance! Kavannah, whether it was a weekly practice, singing at Shabbat services or an outside performance, became one of Erin’s favorite things to do and a safe, comfortable place to be.

At some point, we decided Erin would have a Bat Mitzvah. The Rabbi and Cheryl did an amazing job tailoring the service to be “right” for Erin. Obviously, she was not going to read Torah or give a speech, but they still met weekly to work on prayers and become more familiar with the service. Erin soon looked forward to her special time with the Cantor! When the Rabbi asked how we wanted to handle the Torah portion, of the service, did one of us want to do it or did we want to honor a family member, there was really no question. The bond between Erin and Cantor Wunch was so strong! It was their day and only seemed right to have Cheryl “speak” for Erin with Erin at her side. That’s what we did and it was beautiful!

Cheryl made a huge impact on our whole family! She walked us through an experience that we never imagined it was possible. She was open minded, flexible and patient. She taught us and set an example for our whole congregation that tolerance and acceptance isn’t just possible, but essential and we are all better people for having had her in our lives!
